More Tea-V and this time its not me

Thursday, August 20th, 2009

I was idling on Twitter (@raretealady) the other morning- I know, disgraceful behaviour when you have a company to run- when I saw a message from Ben @TeaTunes saying he was feeling unwell and wondering what tea might be best.
I’ve always found a delicate cup of white silver tip does the trick whatever is wrong with me. It’s gentle on the tummy, soft and sweet and delicious as well as being packed with antioxidants which I hope will help me get better.
Ben lives in Reading where sadly no one sells my tea. So I popped some in the post to him.

This was his very lovely response.

Rare Tea at Abergavenny

Monday, August 17th, 2009

I love going to the Abergavenny Food Festival. It’s my favourite food festival of the year- full of people who love food without the corporate nonsense and flim-flammery you find at some of the bigger events. All the top chefs and food writers are there- but not closeted away in VIP tents- just wandering around- sampling the most wonderful food and chatting to farmers and small producers.

Last year my tutored tea-tasting was such fun and a sell-out success (What me, blowing my own trumpet? Heaven forbid.) that they have invited me back to do some more.
I’m doing my tutored tea-tasting on Sunday 20th of September at 1.00pm - I’ll be running through the spectrum of teas from delicate whites, through exquiste oolongs to the deepest black teas. Most excitingly I’ll be giving an exclusive preview of my new tea from Malawi which won’t go on sale until November.

On Saturday 19th of September at 3.00 I’m joining the famed affineur Eric Charriaux for Tea and Cheese. Yes, tea and cheese. I know it sounds wrong but when you stop to think- milk and tea go wonderfully. And tea and cheese go even better. The way they bring out one another’s flavour has to be tasted to be believed. What is truly amazing is that it has never been done before.

A few months ago I was doing a tutored tasting for the esteemed customers of Melrose and Morgan where I met a wonderful and dapper man, Bertie Miller.

Bertie fell for Rare Tea from the first sip, as almost everyone does when they get the good stuff. This was particularly lucky for me because Bertie is one half of WaterMill with Dave Waters.

They are god’s of the creative world and they agreed to help me. I am truly blessed.

Have a look at the first couple of films they made. And, do please pass on the link to anyone you know who likes tea. It would be wonderful if they spread faster than swine-flu.

Rare Tea at Quo Vadis

Monday, August 10th, 2009

Tatler Restaurant of the Year 2009

I met Sam and Eddie Hart at Quo Vadis when they had just taken over the restaurant and were planning the restoration to its former glory. We drank delicious red wine in the shuttered darkness and their excitement and vision was wonderful to behold. The result is a truly beautiful and elegant restaurant with incredible food.

They also serve the best tea in the world. Yes, yes, you guessed- my teas.

Racine

Wednesday, August 5th, 2009

At the Observer food Monthly Awards earlier this year I met the great and the good of the food world. I was rather nervous and Matthew Fort gallantly took me under his wing and introduced me to many fascinating people, one of whom was Henry Harris of Racine.

The only problem was that I rapidly became a gabbling drunk. A few weeks before I’d had a foot operation to fix a childhood problem and was still unable to wear shoes. But on this night, the night I was getting an award from Mariella Frostrup after she had handed one to Jamie Oliver I thought I’d better.

I spoke to my surgeon and he said- take some painkillers and you’ll be fine in shoes for one night. So I did. And then I had a glass of champagne. You can imagine the rest. I was so overexcited and nervous and elated I really didn’t need that heady cocktail.

When I was introduced to Henry I rambled incomprehensibly. (Poor Nigel Slater was so dumbfounded by my ebullience that he sadly shook his head and turned to speak to someone sane).

Amazingly Henry didn’t hold it against me. Surely a true gentlemen, he never mention what a bore I’d been and allowed me to come to his wonderful restaurant and do a tasting of my Rare Teas.

Yesterday I chatted to all the staff about the teas and how best to serve them and now they are available at surely one of the best restaurants anywhere.
